Wedding Costs – You Get What You Pay For

I love my clients, I really really do. I love hearing all their wedding wishes and ideas, learning about their personalities, style,  and what makes them unique, and working to create a day that shows off that uniqueness and love to all their family and friends. Inevitably however we always come to a bump, or hurdle, along the way….the wedding budget. Creating a wedding budget is by far one of the most stressful aspects of wedding planning because let’s face it, weddings cost A LOT. You will spend more on this one particular day in your life than probably any other so naturally it’s tough to understand and come to grips with that fact, and tally up the numbers. Another thing I’ve noticed when creating the wedding budget with my clients, is that often what you want on your wedding day does not equal what you want to spend on your wedding day. Meaning the dream you have in your head costs far more than what you are prepared to spend. There’s nothing wrong with this, one just has to either adjust the budget or adjust the expectations. Yet that seems to be really really hard to do.

Regardless of how much a couple has to spend on their wedding day I do try to give one major bit of advice. Do not cut corners. Because at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Essentially cutting corners equivacates to taking a giant risk. And who wants to take giant risks with their money? (well I’m sure some people do, but not with your wedding). Sure you can hire that $1000 photographer who has only shot one friend’s wedding and who’s equipment totals one basic DSLR camera and a kit lens but then what if he misses key moments of your day and the photos are terrible? Not to mention what happens if his one crappy camera breaks? Or you can gamble and hire a friend’s mom to do your flowers, after all she’s worked as a grocery store florist for 10 years and knows a thing or two about roses, right? But does she have any experience ordering just the right amount of flowers to fill all your centerpieces, or does she know how to construct a bouquet properly so it won’t fall apart? Will she bring a team of people on your wedding day to be sure the set up is completed in time? What if all the flowers she orders arrive dead? Does she have a network of suppliers to get what she needs fast? Sure you can hire a seamstress 2000 miles away to create a replica of your dream dress for 1/3 the cost. What are you going to do if it arrives 4 weeks before your wedding half finished and completely not how you pictured it?

These are all real scenarios that really happened by the way, I’m not making this stuff up. Of course once in a while a gamble can pay off and you just happened to hire “the next big photographer” 2 years before he became huge and charged 5 times more and you got amazing images for a fraction of what they were worth. But it’s all just that…a big gamble. If you cut corners on your wedding, 9 times out of 10, you will get what you pay for. Quality costs more, it’s that simple. Personally I’d rather not gamble with such a huge sum of money on such an important day. Would you? Instead find other ways to cut costs such as inviting fewer guests, or have a longer engagement to give you time to save more. It will save you a lot of future stress and headaches in the long run.

Miss me?

You may have noticed an extended blogging absence here but fear not, there are some awesome new happenings going on with Simply Stunning Events!

I recently stepped away from work for a whole 10 days as Brian and I headed up north to visit both our families. We spent some time pool-side in his home state of New Jersey and hanging out with my in-laws and our nieces and new 6 month old nephew. We even spent a lovely evening at the Jersey Shore (no Snooki or Situation sightings however) eating seafood, walking the boardwalk, playing Skee-Ball and riding the rides. After 4 days, we headed further north to my family’s lake-side cabin in upstate New York (the spot where Brian proposed 2 years ago) and spent the rest of the week laying on the dock and boating with my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. All in all it was a very relaxing vacation!

But alas now I’m back! And just in time for the fall wedding season! We are so excited about our remaining events for the year, as well as the wonderful new couples we’ve recently booked for next spring. We’ve started working on some great new wedding designs that are sure to be amazing! Be on the look-out too for….drumroll please…a new website coming next month!!! We are also re-vamping our planning packages and offering some sweet new services so stay tuned! Changes are a-coming!

Nashville Wedding Recap – Lydia & Chris

There’s nothing like working with an organized bride, it absolutely makes my job so much easier! This gorgeous bride Lydia was exactly that. It was such a pleasure to work with her and her groom Chris on a chic summer wedding with a bright green, pink, and white color scheme and a clean and simple style. The ceremony was held at the beautiful Benton Chapel at Vanderbilt (where both the bride and groom attended school) and a reception followed at Aerial Nashville. Check out the photos from Image Trick Photography!

We had the opportunity to working with some great vendors on this wedding. The personal flowers, ceremony decor and flowers on the cake we created by Cary Allyn. A Dream Come True catered the event and the guests enjoyed a variety of passed appetizers, a bruschetta station, chef-maned mashed potato bar, and rosemary garlic roast beef carving station. The traditional white cake with cream cheese icing as well as the Vanderbilt themed groom’s cake were both made by The Bake Shoppe and Nashville Party Authority DJ kept the dance floor packed! Guests were able to relax and enjoy the evening at this cocktail style reception complete with comfy lounge seating (provided by Music City Tents & Events). We were hoping to not have to go the tent route but alas the weather called for a 30% chance of showers and while it only rained for about 5 minutes that day, it was better safe than sorry! Thanks so much to Deanna and the team over at Aerial for working so well with our team on putting the reception together. And congrats to Lydia & Chris!

Nashville Wedding Vendor Spotlight – Amy Lynn Larwig MUA

I met Amy Lynn Larwig a little over a year ago and immediately loved her sweet laid back personality. She also does a darn good job making pretty wedding faces every weekend! There are so many reasons I feel it’s worth it to spend a little extra to have your hair and make-up professionally done for your wedding. Not only will you look like the best version of yourself on one of the most memorable days in your life, but you’ll feel confident and look fantastic in your photos! Here is some Q& A with Miss Amy Lynn!

Why did you choose to work in weddings/events? How did you get started?

I didn’t choose weddings. It just kind of happened. I started off doing special events, a few weddings, and cosmetics sales. Then I moved on to print work, album covers, videos, advertising, etc. So in 2007 I did my first wedding in a long time and decided it just wasn’t for me. But in 2008, I really got to know some of the vendors in Nashville and started to get more into the industry. And I fell in love. Weddings are awesome because it’s a happy time, with happy people. And many of the vendors I work with are great friends of mine, so it’s like a party every weekend!

How would you describe your style/product?

I do makeup and hair that is very customized. It’s such a personal thing, so I create looks that are specifically for you. Overall though, my style is very clean. I don’t like sloppy lines or colors that aren’t blended. The whole face needs to work together as a whole.

What separates you from other Nashville area vendors?

My attention to detail sets me apart from other Nashville makeup artists. I’m meticulous in my application, making sure everything is flawless and catered especially to each individual person. I also add in some special goodies for brides that really make their wedding day hair and makeup more of an experience, than a task to complete.

What would be doing if you did not work in weddings?

Well, I don’t spend all my time working in weddings. During the week I work on shoots for commercials, album covers, music videos, etc. But if I didn’t work in the beauty industry, I’d probably be doing something educational. Before all this I was a community educator and went to area high schools teaching about dating violence, so it would probably be something along those lines. I like empowering people with knowledge.

Favorite TV show and why?

House. It’s the perfect mix of drama and medical jargon.

What advice would you give to brides on choosing a make-up artist?

Three things: First, their personality has to be one you enjoy. You’ll be starting your day with that person and they set the mood for how you feel about yourself. Secondly, TRIAL RUN. Someone can have fabulous pictures online, but you need to see what that makeup and hair looks like on you, in person. Be picky about it. If you like what they do for you and it makes you feel awesome, then go for it. Lastly, make sure they are using professional products and good hygiene. Pro products are made for camera and will last your entire event. Good hygiene will prevent a pink eye outbreak on your honeymoon. Ugh. Gross.
What advice would you give to brides on the wedding planning process in general? It’s just not that serious. Some brides get so wrapped up in the details of planning they completely loose sight of the reason they’re getting married: the relationship! So those $4,000 somethings that have to be this particular shade of pink and dazzle in the evening light really aren’t going to matter when you’re 60 years old. You’ll be left with a husband and pictures. That’s it. Stay focused on your commitment to each other and don’t stress over the silly stuff that’s going to disappear on day one of your marriage.

Such great advice from Amy Lynn! I seriously love that run into each other at StudioWed Nashville all the time and get to talk weddings. Recently Amy revealed an awesome video showcasing some of her work. Be sure to check it out.
